4This Higher Priced Model Much Better, A Bit Tough to Assemble
By Karl Burrows
I bought the $100 42-inch model for my 5 and 7 year olds for Christmas and when I took it out of the box, the backboard was hollow formed plastic and just didn't seem like it would be a good long term solution to grow with the kids, so I exchanged it for this model. Again, when I opened the box the backboard was 1/4" plexiglass (polycarbonite), I was skeptical. From all the positive reviews, I decided to go ahead and assemble it and give it a try.

First, assembly is not for the timid. You will need multiple sets of tools to put this together. The instructions will state to use (2) 1/2", 7/8" or other size wrenches. The reality of it is you will probably need a wrench set and a socket set. I was lucky enough to have both at hand. The wrench is good for the holding the nut and the socket is much better for the tightening. Some of the lock nuts are very tough to tighten down. You will also need a socket extension when you assemble the height adjustment bracket. Without these, it will be a struggle to assemble it correctly. Secondly, the instructions are very detailed, but some pages are very hard to follow. There are many bags of parts, but none are labeled and sometimes it took a few minutes to figure out which parts went with which section of instructions. Also, there is not one picture of a fully assembled unit and some of the pictures leave you making an educated guess as to which parts go in what direction, etc. Once you do figure it out, you will find that most parts fit snugly and appeared to be machined well. No rough edges and only one screw that was a bit out of line on the backboard.

It took about 2 1/2 hours of continuous work to put it all together, so be prepared to spend an afternoon putting this together (along with impatient kids waiting to play on it!). That said, I was pleasantly surprised with the finished product. My worries about the backboard disappeared with the first shot. It does have some wobble as would any portable backboard and it is a bit dead (meaning you can make a shot off the backboard with a bit of force and it will die softly into the net). I didn't see a lot of wobble and even with my shots, it seemed pretty true with the exception of the weak backboard. The best thing about the goal is the height adjustment. It is literally just a aqueeze of a handle and the backboard moves very easily to the height you want. I was very impressed that it worked so easily and didn't take anything away from the sturdiness of the goal.

If you want to make an investment in a portable goal, then spend the extra money and get the larger, polycarbonite backboard. It is worth the difference. I found that, once assembled, it looks great, is sturdy enough for rougher play should sit in out driveway for many years. I think once you work through the assembly you will be pleased with the goal.

NOTE: The 5 digit models (51XXX) come with the easy adjustment. The 4 digit ones (13XX) require bringing the goal down and unscrewing bolts to raise or lower. It took me a bit of investigation to figure that out and it isn't stated in some of the model descriptions, so I hope that helps.

Pro's:

* Upgraded model well worth the cost over the "base" units.
* Height adjustment is very easy to use.
* Very stable and sturdy, strong rim.
* MADE IN AMERICA!!

Con's

* A bit of a struggle with assembly.
* The pole and wheels aren't really attached. They just kind of snap to the base and if moved, they can pop out, which could be hazardous and should be fixed.

Hey, Landmark, if you read your reviews, I would love to edit your instructions to fix some of the things that need further clarification and labeling the bags with numbers to match the instructions would be a plus as well. Other than that, good job!!!

5So far so good
By Sandy in SC
My son and his friends (ages 8-15) have been using this goal for about 6 months with no issues. They get pretty rough out there and so far, so good. It was easy to assemble and set up. I did a lot of research and review reading before I purchased this basketball backboard and feel I made the best decision in my price range and you can't beat free delivery to your door!!!

4Great Choice for a Portable Hoop (UPDATED 1 year later!)
By J. Charles
UPDATE: After having this up for the entire year (Aug 2011 - Aug 2012), I'd like to report that it is virtually identical to the first day I set it up. Great durability, no faded paint, backboard still in great shape, left the base filled with water all through the winter, net still in good shape, etc. Still sturdy, solid, and strong. BEST... PURCHASE... EVAH!!!!

-----

Overall, I'd say the Lifetime 51550 Courtside Portable Basketball System is an excellent choice for anyone looking to buy a portable hoop system.

PACKAGING:
The box itself is pretty big, although I'd say it's as small as they could make it while still containing all of the parts, the largest pieces being the base and the backboard itself. There's a lot of little hardware, but all of it comes packaged in several bags, all of which are clearly marked and numbered.

INSTALLATION:
I rate the quality of the installation instructions very highly. The first few pages indicate all of the individual parts, which numbered bags they can be found in, and what that part is used for (backboard assembly, pole assembly, etc.) so there is no confusion. Then when you actually start the assembly, at the top of each page, they show what tools should be used and what parts you will be assembling. It's really very easy to put together, and I read online that others estimate around 3 hours to put it together. I took my time, though and it probably took me about 5 hours, including the time it took to go through and make sure I had the right number of parts for everything.

TO FREEZE OR NOT TO FREEZE? (UPDATED)
Another point to note is that while Lifetime indicates you can fill it with water or sand, others online recommend against sand because it is very difficult to get out if you ever need to. I would definitely recommend going with water. Others online also recommend using a combination of water and anti-freeze for colder climates, but Lifetime specifically indicates that you do NOT need to use anti-freeze, that the base is made from a material that will expand if the water inside freezes. (UPDATE: I've had the hoop set up since the summer, filled with just water, and as of 2/1/2012, it's still fine. Our winter temps so far have been around 15-35f, with some crazy daily fluctuations causing regular freezing and thawing, and the base is still in perfect shape.)

MISC:
As others have noted, once the unit is assembled, it's very easy to adjust the height of the backboard using a one-handed operation. The backboard itself is of a decent size, and the rim is built to withstand jams. It also comes with a nice wrap-around pad to protect kids from smashing their head into the pole, and a height adjustment sticker that shows the adjustment from 8' to 10' in half-foot increments.

CONS (UPDATED):
One thing I have noted is that there is a good amount of "give" when the ball hits the backboard (i.e. the backboard wobbles), so the rebound ability of the ball is affected. Not greatly, but don't expect the same rebound response that you'd get from a permanent backboard. It could just be that I need to get up there and tighten all of the bracket bolts, but they were pretty tight when I first assembled it, so I assume it's just an effect of the portable system. (UPDATE: I've since determined that most of the wobble is due to the fact that I have the base on an somewhat uneven surface, and so it doesn't have the same stability as when it is on a flat surface.)

IN SUMMARY:
Still, a great buy. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a portable hoop.

5Loving it . . .
By trebe
This basketball goal and base by Lifetime is economical, relatively simple to put together, and pretty sturdy. The instructions are easy to follow, and no drilling or special tools are required. Because of possible liability concerns, safety is stressed. Although at a couple of steps, it states that two adults are required to complete the task, one adult with moderate strength and weight, exercising care, can safety get the job done. I put it together by myself, however if another person is available, it would certainly be advisable to follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

The hollow plastic base can be filled with either water or sand to provide the required counterweight to support the pole and rim. It will cost more, but I recommend using sand rather than water, especially if you live in a cold weather area. The instructions state that 319 pounds of sand are required. Not sure about that, but it probably takes between 3 and 4 cubic feet of sand to fill the base.

The base has a pair of small plastic wheels that help you to move or position it. Once in place, you fill up the base to about half capacity, raise the goal upright, and then fill the base to capacity. Unless you are capable of moving a football blocking sled, don't' plan on moving the system very far, after it is filled. The pole and backboard will bend back and wobble during normal play. This is to be expected, as the system will not be as rigid as a regulation goal. The plastic backboard is smaller than regulation, so your angles for bank shots are tighter, but at least it is rectangular rather than rounded at the top. If you can dunk, take it easy or you could take the hoop down. The rim is black rather than orange. The net is low quality, and does not slow the ball down after a goal.

Although the system is pretty sturdy, long term life is an open question. There are exposed bolts and metallic parts, and the top of the pole is open, so if exposed to rain, corrosion is inevitable. The rim height is adjustable in six inch increments from 7.5 to 10 feet. Once you set the rim height, painting any unfinished metal parts might be a good idea.

Overall, this is a very good product for the price, especially if you get it on sale with Super Saver shipping. Hopefully it will hold up well under the elements. So far, I am loving it! My shot is improving, and I am also saving gas because I don't have to drive to the neighborhood park.

3Decent system depending on price
By riesy
First off, the picture that is associated with this product is not correct. After looking at plenty of these systems to purchase and reviewing the picture supplied with this item I thought this system was going to have an adjustable height mechanism which could be done by a handle on the backside of the backboard. If you look behind the backboard in the picture that's the kind of height adjustment mechanism shown BUT that's not the one you will receive. The mechanism to adjust height on the model I received is more tedious. You must remove a bolt, lower the unit to where you want and reinstall the bolt. I know, not that big of a deal but I do think the picture supplied for the product should be accurate and in this case it is not.

With all that said... for the sale price I got on it including shipping ($130) it's not a bad unit. My kids are 11, 8 and 5 and I didn't want to buy an expensive unit to find out they could care less about it. They have enjoyed it so far (1 month) and it's another sport we can all take part in so overall I'd say it was a good purchase.

3Lifetime 1269 Pro Court Portable basketball system 44 in fusion
By Sharon Hayes
This worked perfect for our needs-my son is 9 yrs old and will not be doing any dunking, etc yet. I didn't realize that the backboard did not come out from the pole until I realized that other people's basketball systems all had this extension pushing the backboard away from the pole and ours came right out of the pole-you would hit it as you dunked.

Still, he won't be dunking and the price was good for us-necessary to be able to afford it, so it still is good. You should just know there are differences.

2Is Infrared score-keeping really better?
By Kevin the Bargain Hunter
I'm kind of surprise I'm the first to review this unit here at Amazon. There are some many systems in the $150 range, but I spent the extra $100 for hopefully a solid build. And I was not disappointment by the build quality. It is definitely sturdy. Just watch the Lifetime video, it doesn't lie. The frames are solid, the rims are nice and thick. By looking at the pictures of the other systems, you can just imagine the flimsy frames shaking when you shoot because their frames are thin and the rims don't look thick either. So this Lifetime product is definitely worth the extra money if you're looking for a rock solid structure.

Now here is my complaint. These types of arcade games are useless without accurate score-keeping. You need to earn a certain amount of points to get bonus time, and it's very frustrating to not get any bonus time because the thing can't count properly. And when you're competing with friends, it's no fun having to keep track of the baskets the machine didn't count. You have to trust what your friend tells you, and they have to trust what you tell them. You get into conversations like, "Well, I really won cause I'm missing 10 pts here!!" You might as well shut off the electronics! I've never owned an arcade type basketball game, so I don't know when infrared score keeping took over the older system, which I read was some sort of clicker in the middle of the rim. When the ball falls through the basket, it falls on the clicker and that's how it keeps count. I read that the negatives about the old system is that the clicker can break and you'll have to replace them. Make sense and newer technology is always better, right? Well, I'm not so sure. I think I want to find an old system just so I can compare. If the clicker is more accurate, then I'd rather have a clicker that I have to replace once in awhile, than an infrared system that never works.

In conclusion, the Double Shot Basketball ended up being a $250 indoor hoop. If I didn't want score-keeping, I could have bought an over the door hoop for $25 bucks and custom make my own ball return net. So this has been a disappointment. If Amazon or Life-Time offers me a $100 credit, then I'd keep it just for the awesome hoop, but for $250, I want the score-keeping accuracy!!

BTW, it took me over 3hrs to build. I did it alone, but definitely a helping hand that you can call on anytime would help. I've contacted Life-Time to ask them if this infrared system is inherently error prone, or if I have a faulty system. I hope it's faulty, which would mean a new electronic component will make this the perfect arcade system. But if this is just inherently error prone, then I will no longer trust any infrared basketball system. Believe me, it is frustrating when you're 2 pts away from bonus time and the machine doesn't count your last 4 made baskets. I was going John McEnroe on the machine as if it was a person.

Lets see how Lifetime can help me. I will keep you guys updated. I will either have a perfect system, or this whole thing is going back to Amazon.

12/23/2010 UPDATE!!
Life-Time is very good with replacing parts. Along with the defective score-board, 2 of the 7 basketballs deflated overnight no matter how much you pump. So they sent me 2 new basketballs too! I got the new scoreboard and unfortunately, this one was defective as well. However it was an improvement. This time the score-keeping on the right is perfect, except for during it's transition in giving you bonus time. It usually gives a bonus sounding alarm, if you make a basket simultaneously at this moment, it doesn't count your hoop, but still a vast improvement, and something you can accept knowing that it's probably by design. However, the score-keeping on the left is as bad as my first unit. It will miss at least 5 to 8 buckets in a span of a game. So we just take turns shooting the hoop on the right, and it's very fun and I see the potential. I asked Life-Time if they want to try a third time. Not sure if they'll do it, if not, no sweat.. this thing is going back to Amazon.

12/30/2010 UPDATE!!
The 3rd Scoreboard functions properly! I imagine many units are sold with scoreboards not counting properly but some people don't care probably cause it's for their kids, who also probably don't care. But for the competitive adult buyers, get ready to go through a few rounds of exchanges. I finally got a scoreboard that counts every basket, so don't give up. This is still the best system out there in this price range. When you miss on the cheaper systems, you hear a "CLANG" on the flimsy frames. When you miss on this system, it's more like a "THUD" cause it's just constructed better.

1/1/2011 UPDATE!!
After playing around with it some more, the infrared still misses shots, but they are few and far between, and does not effect game play. The faulty ones will miss 4 to 7 baskets within the first 30 seconds. The one I have now will sometimes not miss at all, but then other games it may miss one or two when you go deep into the game. I suspect this will be the case with all infrared systems, it's not going to be 100% perfect especially at this price range. I recently also tested out old school ones with the clicker. Though the clicker is more accurate, I prefer the infrared with it's minor inaccuracies over the clicker because I realize the ball gets stuck more often than the infrared misses shots. It's no fun when the game is interrupted, or you have to start over because of a stuck ball. The clicker system would work perfectly if you don't play with a net, but that's no fun. I know some of you may say, "Man, this guy is picky!" Yes I am. This wasn't bought for kids, we bought it for grown-ups. So for all the big boys shopping around for a hoop, I hope you appreciate this info.

5This Is the Best Item in our Game Room!
By Higgins
I love the Lifetime double shot! We actually had the old Lifetime double shot and were excited when they came out with the new version. This is much better than the other cheap units on the market. It comes with a thicker backboard, thicker rims, a wider ramp, and the new infared scoring system! This is a very quality unit and has kept score for us perfectly. I love to have competitions with my brothers to see who can get the highest score. It has two bonus rounds if you score 30 points and then 60 points. When we first played it we were getting in the 80's. Now the high score is 159. It is fun to try and keep raising the bar. It is also good times when two of us play at the same time. I would highly recommend this item!!!!

5Great Arcade Basketball Game
By C. LeBrun
I recently purchased the Lifetime Double-Shot Arcade Basketball System from another website because it was cheaper but this system is far superior in quality (thicker frame & rims) and scoring accuracy compared to a Sportcraft model which is what I replaced and I am very happy that I did. The infrared scoring is a night and day difference compared to the clicker scoring found in the Sportcraft models. It very rarly misses any baskets. Also, with the clicker scoring you would run into many problems of the net getting tangled with the clicker and then the balls would get stuck in the hoop and if you shot too fast many of the baskets wouldn't register. That is why I decided to upgrade to this game after less than a year with the Sportcraft. I would recommend this product to anyone. I have had absolutely no problems with the infrared scroing so hopefully in the previous review it was just a faulty product.

5Big hit with the whole family!
By Renee Spafford
It took us a two days to put together because my son and I needed to take a break from screwing in all the screws!! (There are tons!!) but once it was all up and together it got tons of use right away. Electronics work perfectly, no issues at all, seems to be scoring correctly. The boys like the metal chain net because it makes a "cool" sound :)

2Very difficult to assemble!
By Bryan Hankins
I haven't actually given it to my kids yet because its a Christmas present. Thank goodness I didn't wait until Christmas Eve to assemble it because some of the poles that form the base of the goal were fabricated wrong and I had to actually re drill holes to get it put together properly. That of course was after struggling with it for a couple of hours to figure out what the problem actually was. Hopefully everything will be smooth sailing for anyone else purchasing it. It is actually pretty sturdy after its put together.

5Official NBA Ball Vs. TF1000, NBA composite, Wilson Solution/Evolution
By I. Hernandez
As an owner of many basketballs and always interested to add basketballs to my shooting rack, I finally dedicated some time and money to get the official NBA leather game ball and took time to break it in before properly reviewing it.

I must note that all the basketballs are at 8psi (which is the median of the nba psi standards of 7.5-8.5psi).

The official NBA Ball comes out of the box really slick. It feels cheap but not like a $10 rubber ball that you'd find at a toy store or the promotional balls you'd get from Pizza Hut years ago. A leather ball feels completely different from any ball a non-competitive player has played with. Most of us that play basketball for fun usually just played with any ball. Over time, recreational players get used to the feel these balls have and that's why they are quick to shoot down the NBA ball.

When I brought both NBA ball types to games (leather and composite), most players thought that the leather NBA ball was the ball that was rejected by the NBA players. They were so sure of it. On the flip side, they thought that the NBA composite ball was the current basketball used. Obviously they never played with anything of this grade and didn't know what a leather ball felt like.

Initially, the leather ball feels heavier as a reviewer said and takes a long time to break in. The best method of breaking it in for me was a two part process. 1. I got some leather conditioner, rubbed it with a rag and let it dry. 2. The next day I would go and shoot around with it for a few hours. Dribbling breaks it in and with this conditioner, it broke it at a faster rate. Now that it's broken in, it's an absolutely fantastic ball. Nothing comes close to it. The more you play with it, the better it feels. It holds air really well and doesn't leave scuff marks on your hands. However, it is a real sensitive ball and has a couple noticeable scuff marks. About a half inch each. Doesn't affect the ball outside of ruining the perfect image you see in the product description. I must note that all the balls used have the same PSI (about 7.5, which is the median based on NBA rules).

I am a short player and have small hands. I don't have any problems with this ball. I have to disagree with another reviewer about having to be a "man-child" or needing to be strong to use this ball. It's still a ball! It feels lighter as you break it in but that may also be due to getting used to playing with it. I did notice that it is more forgiving on the rim as a shooter and as many people have said, "it feels right". What does this mean? You would have to shoot around with it when it is broken in to feel the same way. When it is not broken in, it may feel too slick, slippery and may be frustrating to use. Don't lose your patience or give it a bad review until you break it in. I also think it has a distinct sound when you get nothing-but-net. It's a better sound and makes you want to continue to make swishes. I use this ball in a league I play in as well as the other balls mentioned in this review and for our team at least, our shooting percentage is higher with the leather NBA ball. There are a lot of variables of game shooting but just wanted to make a note of that.

The NBA composite ball feels great when you start playing with it. Everyone on my rec. team preferred it initially because it has a soft and nice grip. After it got broken in a bit, it began to leave little burns on the tips of my fingers and on the inside of my palms. Since I've broken it in even more, it lost the great grip but it's still pretty solid. I don't think it's incredibly slippery when wet but it's not like the leather ball. When the leather ball is wet, it actually feels better. That's probably why you see Steve Nash lick his fingers as he dribbles up court. You don't need the leather ball to be wet to feel nice but it does feel nice wet when other composite balls feel slightly slippery. In the end, some people don't give the composite ball a chance because it was rejected by the NBA players. They automatically say it's trash without playing with it. I think it's the best composite basketball out there. It would be my number 2 basketball from the basketballs listed here. Since it's hard to find the defunct NBA composite basketball, I doubt most people will have the option to test it for themselves. (update: When I first wrote this, I did believe it was the best composite out there but I feel that it has declined to the point where I cannot stand by that comment. It IS the best composite ball until you reach a certain point and then it declines. I haven't played with it as much of late due to the recent declines. I have played with other composite balls nearly as much and they did not decline as fast as the NBA composite).

The Wilson Solution (official college ball) is a great ball as well but also of the composite variety. It's nice overall but for the price, I'd rather have the official nba ball or the TF 1000. This is the same for the Wilson Evolution. Both Wilson balls are good but they are too spongy for my taste. I have a Solution and a couple of my teammates have Evolutions. I like the Solution better.

The TF 1000 (official high school ball) is also a nice ball and has great grip and feel. The reason why it's so popular is that the grip is nearly as good as the NBA comp. ball but without the bad press. The newer ZK Pro feels very similar to the Wilson Solution yet it's cheaper in price. Better yet, The TF-1000 composite, the cheaper model to the ZK Pro feels better than the more expensive ZK Pro out of the box. The catch is after you play with both of them for awhile, the TF-1000 composite fades in quality while the ZK-Pro holds up better. I guess the durability is what makes the ZK Pro worth 20 dollars more.-- The cheaper 'microfiber composite' TF-1000 ball actually feels better than the ZK Pro. Initially the price difference was 20 dollars but now you can find the difference to be $5-$10. I think they are close in quality but the ZK-Pro seems a bit bouncier and provides longer rebounds, which I find to be a sign of the ball being too spongy. I find this to be true with the Wilson basketballs. I do not find this to be much of a problem with the 'microfiber' or the nba composite basketball.

For those on the fence, the ZK pro or the TF-1000 composite ball may be your best bet. If you're used to playing with a rubber, composite ball, you will probably be the most satisfied with the TF balls. For quality and durability, I would suggest spending a little extra on the NBA ball. I've had all of these basketballs for a year or more and while the TF's, Wilsons and the NBA composite are nice, the quality seems to fade over time while the leather NBA ball just seems to keep getting better with each indoor run.

Finally, there are many good basketballs out there. I have played and liked the Molten GL7, The Baden Lexum Elite and the Nike 4005 balls. You won't go wrong with any of these basketballs--- But if 'on a desert island', I would go with the NBA leather basketball over any ball out there. If I couldn't afford the NBA leather basketball, I would go with the TF-1000 microfiber composite although you are aware that the TF-1000s do have a relatively short shelf life compared to their leather counterparts.

4GREAT BALL, however; for hoop zealots only
By Bubba Mcgee
There's nothing greater than: " OK, that's 10, let's run". After wearing out two Spalding TF1000's (both were lost, or stolen...I can't remember) I was checking out the NBA ball. I knew about the slick feel, that it requires a lot of breaking in, that no one would want to play with it in the games. I even called Spalding and they told me that the NBA balls are pre-broken in for the pros. I figured "Hey, where I play there are always 2 or 3 fairly new TF 1000's around to use for "game" balls anyway". So.... I got my NBA leather ball, and yes no one wants to use it as "game" ball; however I do notice that between games when we are shooting around, that the "slickness" doesn't seem to effect anybody's shot. I just love shooting with it. I have noticed that in the summer I can palm it. Maybe it's just the humidity, in general, or the porosity of the leather absorbing humidity. Even in the winter if I've been playing and have worked up a good sweat, I find that I can palm it. So there may be something to the leather absorbing moisture thing. I've had mine almost a year, and to me it feels better and better all the time, yet still has never seen game action. I'll admit, it just does not have the tacky and soft feel of a new or not worn out TF1000.
Bottom line is: never use it outdoors, which is also true for the TF1000; don't expect anyone to want to use it for the "game" ball. Just get it if you love basketball, and appreciate the feel of it and how sounds as it drains in, or how it bounces off the rim. You won't wear it out. And I hope mine eventually breaks in to the point it will be used as "game" ball and if that happens I'll submit another review. Meanwhile. I'm glad I got my NBA leather ball. But I'm admitting that I am truly a basketball nut, so you gotta just decide for yourself if getting this ball is for you. I hope you found this helpful.

5The standard
By badjazz
First off, this is not the tackiest, softest basketball out there. It is a real basketball. It feels larger, harder, and heavier than most other basketballs that are popular now for indoor play. All the microfiber basketballs that have come out that allow everybody to palm the ball like MJ are like toys compared to this. Consequently, many people who are used to the microfiber basketballs hate these. But, to me at least, these are what basketballs are supposed to be. They feel right, bounce right, and rebound like a basketball should. Highly recommended.

5Campsite Essential
By Jon
Pros: pretty compact; sludge-free coffee; easy set-up; easy clean-up
Cons: no thermal carafe

I bought this a week before setting off for a week in Yosemite. Next to a tent and sleeping bag, this was the best piece of gear in our campsite. This propane-powered coffeemaker makes 10 cups of sludge-free coffee in about 15-20 minutes. I used the standard 8-12 cup paper basket filter and had no overflow issues using 8 scoops of coffee.

One thing I learned right away was to fill the carafe to just below the rim, pour as much into the reservoir as possible, and pour the rest into a cup before brewing. Then, as space permits in the reservoir, add the remaining water to get a nearly full carafe of coffee. If you don't follow these steps, you'll end up with about 2/3's of a carafe. Also, if the temps are even mildly cool, the coffee will get cold quickly due to a lack of a thermal carafe. The get-around to that is to bring along a separate thermal carafe. Maybe Coleman will fix that small issue in the near future (hint, hint).

Overall, the Coleman Portable Propane Coffeemaker w/ stainless carafe is a must-have piece of camping gear for any javahead. It's reasonably compact so it fit easily into the bear-proof food locker and makes a nice cup of joe. Highly recommended!

5IT WAS A HUGE HIT!
By sherylk
I bought this item - the Coleman Propane Coffeemaker with the Steel Carafe - as my "new" camping item of the year. And boy was it a hit - not only with the members of our camping party, but other campers passing by our campsite. It is FAST, it is easy to set up and use, it makes great coffee - just like home, and the stainless steel carafe kept the coffee warm for quite a while after I turned the temperature off. (Although I did turn the temperature guage to LOW after the brewing had stopped so our late riser sleepy campers were sure to have hot coffee.) We made quite a few pots of coffee in the 4 mornings during our trip on a single cylinder of propane. I know some our fellow campers will be buying one of these. It is a great addition to our camping gear.

4Coleman Portable Propane Coffeemaker with Stainless Steel Carafe

For our type of camping trips (primitive, no electricity)this coffeemaker is almost perfect .Lights easily and seems to make a pot much quicker than the 15 minutes stated in the ad I read. The stainless steel did discolor the first time it was used(around the burner area only). It is quite bulky so we put it in a plastic tote with our backup grill.Overall after an 8 day camping trip we are very pleased with this coffeemaker.

5Great quality and value
By William Peltola
This Tee-pee worked out perfect for me. I took it out for a week long camping trip and one night it rained enough to where I was hoping this thing would float. Not a drop of water got in (seams are all taped) and I stayed cozy all night.

Few things to note, it does take a little longer to set up than the typical pin-and-pole tent, but it's worth it in the end. This latest model has a fully attached floor (unlike the older model)

I give it a 9/10. More on this tent at my site [...]

4Good little tent for the money
By Pappy
I ordered this little tent for use in backyard campouts with my Grandkids. It is not a North Face, but for the money it is just right. Have not used it in foul weather, but it is constructed in such a fashion that I think it will hold up just fine. Another commenter fussed about difficulty with gettting it back into the bag, I had no problem at all. This product is a good little tent for the money and will fit my needs with the kids just fine. It is simple, easy to erect, and adequately durable. We look forward to many dark nights of camp fires, roasted marshmellows, ghost stories, and security from an adequate tent all zipped up and secure. I don't know, this tent is maybe number 10 in my 60 years of tent camping. It aint bad at all.

4Love it ... but it needs work
By M.Anne Olson
I had the pleasure of calling this home for the last month. Luckily, it only rained once. Water came in at both doors and everything was damp. I would highly recommend this product if a rain cover extended out over the door ways could be manufactured to go along with, or be sold seperately.

The pole in the middle makes assembly very easy (as opposed to a traditional tee-pee with twelve long poles framing the side walls) however it was sometimes difficult to manuever around with an air mattress on one side. I would recommend not using an air mattress with this product ... a simple bedroll would be more convenient.

And one more thing, the opening of the tent is good for short people. I'm 5' 3" and may be a little tall for this particular tent door. Unless I bent almost in half, I caught my hair in the zipper. :( But I still wouldn't trade it for a dome tent with its many poles.

Midland XT511 GMRS Two-Way Emergency Crank Radio

5Best Emergency Radio
By Dr. Wilfredo M. Viray
If you are looking for an Emergency 2 way radio, look no further.

Pros:
1. AM/FM - These are not Bose speakers, but they are clear. It works just like portable battery powered radios. This is useful in emergencies when the TV and cable are knocked down so you can get news from stations that are still transmitting. I take it out with me on my patio and just listen to music or news.

2. Multiple power source - Can run on Alkaline, included Rechargeable battery pack, AC socket, DC through the cigarette lighter, or just cranking to recharge the batteries. With all those sources of energy, you will never run out of power.

3. 5 Watt GMRS Radio - It truly is powerful. Just as strong as my professional radios. Excellent as a base station when traveling or trying to look for help in an emergency.

4. Portability - It comes with a strap so that you dont have to hold it when moving about. It also has a handle so you have a firm grip when carrying it.

5. LED flashlight - You will never be in the dark. I have tried leaving it on the whole night and it still had have charge. I just used the crank to fully charge it again.

6. Weather-proof - I actually used it when there was a one week heavy downpour here LA. It got wet in the rain, but it did not fail.

7. VOX - It has 3 levels of sensitivity. At level 1, it is so sensitive that it will transmit if someone in the room speaks.

8. External Speaker Mic - It is very clear and is functional. It uses the same connectors as my Professional Icom handheld radio, so you can even upgrade the Speaker mic if you wish.

Cons:
1. Durability - As a base station, or if you don't drop it it is perfectly fine. It is not built to withstand a drop on a hard surface like Professional radios. This is an emergency base station so, you aren't expected to treat it like a walkie talkie. They never stated that it is as durable as a professional radio, so I was not expecting it. So it isn't such a big deal.

2. No carrying case - It would have made it more useful if they included a small bag where you can put this and the accessories, as well as some basic emergency supplies. But, again, this was something I knew that was not included so, it is just a nice to have.

Summary:
It does everything it says it can do, and does it very well. If you were caught after an earthquake, this is the equipment you will need to have with you. It delivers what it promises, and is better than the other Midland Walkie talkies.

*****UPDATE APRIL 2, 2010********
I performed a distance and clarity test.

Test equipment:
1. Midland XT511($65)
2. ICOM F21 4 WATT PROFESSIONAL RADIO($200)
3. ICOM F40GT 4 WATT PROFESSIONAL RADIO($500)

Test Scenario:
1. My wife standing on the balcony of my house. She has both the Midland and the ICOM F40GT.
2. I will stop every 1 mile and get down from the car and I will use the ICOM F21 to talk to her.
3. I will ask her to communicate first with the Midland, then the ICOM.

Test results:
Mile 1:
1. Midland - I can hear her and understand her without static or noise. The audio quality was a little muffled and was not as loud as the ICOM.

2. ICOM - I can hear her and understand her without static or noise. The audio was noticeably louder and clearer than the Midland.

Mile 2:
1. Midland - I can still talk to her. There is some static and a little noise. The audio did not drop.
2. ICOM - Just as good as it was at 1 mile. No static or noise.

Mile 3:
1. Midland - Barely audible. Trails in and out.
2. ICOM - Noticeable static and noise, but I can still communicate without drop of audio.

Summary:
The ICOM can reach further and is clearer than the Midland in transmit and receive, but it still does what it was meant to do and it does do it well, standing up to an ICOM. But keep in mind that the ICOM is just a tranceiver, it does not have any of the many functions of the Midland. I still give this 5 stars for function and excellent value.

****UPDATE November 28,2011****
I am very happy to report that it still works fine and I have had no problems with it. I use it as my mobile base station when we go outdoors. Still doing a great job. do not leave batteries inside if you intend to store it so that the battery will not leak or cause corrosion.

****UPDATE October 26, 2012*****
Amazingly, both Emergency GMRS radios are alive and still used daily. I have one under my car seat, and the other one is supposed to be in my Bug Out Bag, but instead of shelling out money, I used it as my patio radio. I listen to my favorite Radio station, 104.3 FM in LA. Of course I switch over to AM and NOAA just to be sure there are no emergencies, or just to find out the weather forecast. I also Kayak, so it helps to know if the waves are high in the beach area.

All consumer radios have limited warranties, usually lasting only a year. So please TEST YOUR RADIOS extensively in the first year so that if there is a problem with it, they will replace it. But, I am so happy with how long these radios have lasted. $65 for 3 years of extensive use as an emergency radio, flashlight, Patio entertainment and weather forecasts. I only had to change the rechargeable battery and bought a spare after 3 years.

Hope to catch you on the air.

****UPDATE January 16,2013*****
Coming up to 4 years and these radios are still working great. The AC Adapter wire got cut because I accidentally ran over it with the Vacuum cleaner(Genius, I know). I called Midland now and told them, no questions asked, they told me they were sending me a brand new adapter for FREE! That is EXCELLENT customer service right there! Kudos to Midland.

Anyway, I am using the Dual channel watch option now since more of my neighbors also got into radio. I have 2 groups talking on different channels so that it does not get crowded. I then use the Dual Channel Monitor feature to monitor 2 channels simultaneously. We have our radios always on so that we can call each other, and I am acting as a repeater/operator since I have the XT511 Basecamp. We make sure to always have someone in the neighborhood monitoring the radios. It does give us peace of mind that we can call for help to the entire neighborhood at a press of a button.

2Big features, small performance
By Mike K
I have to think that there is tremendous quality control variability with this radio based on the wildly different reviews.

I'm a radio geek and have been collecting radios for the last 40 years. When I saw the ad for this Midland I just had to have it. I thought it would be a perfect addition for my camping adventures. The radio seems to be totally loaded with just about anything you would need. It has a GRMS/FRS 2-way radio, an AM/FM radio, a weather radio, a clock with alarm and even a 3 LED flashlight. Add to this the fact that it runs on both alkaline and a wind-up rechargeable battery! Wow.

Sadly, none of the functions work very well. Both the AM and FM reception are very subpar. AM reception could only receive the strongest stations and they bled over adjacent frequencies. Many stations that I could pick up on a cheap pocket radio could not be picked up on this radio. FM was worse, only picking up a couple of very powerful local stations.

Weather band worked, but only barely. I was able to pick up many more channels on a little Grundig/Eton wind-up.

FRS/GRMS radio functions were similarly mediocre to poor.

Cranking was more awkward than on other emergency radios that I have used including those by Freeplay and Grundig.

On a positive note, the LED flashlight is nice and the clock/alarm is also a nice feature. You also get a lot of accessories, including an external mic, both car and AC chargers and a carrying strap.

Overall, I was disappointed by this radio. The fact that others like it suggests to me that there may be a lot of variability between radios. However, in general, I would pass on this radio. There are many inexpensive GRMS/FRS radios that would do a better job. If you are looking for a good emergency broadcast band radio check out those made by Freeplay or Grundig/Eton.

5Surprise Performer
By Mike Shirley
I bought this radio based on Google reviews as I wanted a crank AM-FM primarily. But the GMRS side of this radio is superb, the NiMH battery with additional AA alk options, hand mic/speaker are most welcome.

I use FRS/GMRS quite a bit both on the Motorola commercial side, Ham and family. I have used scores of different radios from $10 junk FRS walkies to $1000 commercial 2-way. For the price, the GMRS performance is excellent. Sensitive receiver, credible power (not published; but I'm guessing 2 watts on the GMRS channels), good carrier and PL/DCS squelch systems and all the junk beeps and bops are disabled by default. The weather and other features are icing on a a fine cake.

Only downside for my application is that the size of the unit is fairly large. It currently is on 7/24 in my office sitting on GMRS channel 7, PL 22. It is replacing my desktop Audiovox 2000 as my full time monitor radio.
